The New York Times described literary, music, and cultural critic Kevin Dettmar’s most recent volume, co-edited with Jonathan Lethem, Shake It Up: Great American Writing on Rock and Pop From Elvis to Jay Z (Library of America, 2017) as “a dream jukebox” of music writing. Chair of Pomona College’s English Department and an expert on both rock music and modernist literature, Dettmar is the author of Gang of Four’s: “Entertainment!” (Bloomsbury’s 33 ½ Series, 2014), Is Rock Dead? (Routledge, 2006), and The Illicit Joyce of Postmodernism: Reading Against the Grain (University of Wisconsin Press, 1996). He has also written for The Atlantic Monthly and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In a discussion moderated by Professor Gregory Erickson, hear Dettmar’s take on how to research, write, and edit across disciplines and interests.
