An Interview with LUSI

An Interview with LUSI

Lumpur Sidoarjo, also known as LUSI, is a mud volcano in Indonesia. In an attempt to learn more about the volcano, I decided to interview the source herself: LUSI. Inspired by the podcast “Everything is Alive,” this episode gives a voice to the inanimate mass of mud.

Unlike virtually all other volcanoes, LUSI was triggered by human activity. Its creation was due to an oil drilling accident. Since the eruption, LUSI has swallowed over a dozen villages. Throughout the episode, you will hear as LUSI grapples with the knowledge that her existence is the cause of hardship, has one of her dreams realized, and confesses her jealousy of other volcanoes. Through research-based humor, the creation of “An Interview with LUSI” is an attempt to process the ongoing disaster in Indonesia.
