“Designed not only for sighted viewers, but also readable for blind and visually impaired ‘viewers,’ ‘See Differently’ is a poster series that sends a message of inclusion and awareness. The all-white posters, seen from afar, may appear to the sighted viewer as blank, the same way a visually stimulating two-dimensional design is experienced by those without the capacity for sight. The three-dimensional, tactile nature of these posters, and the hierarchical elevation of braille over traditional letterforms, prioritizes the experience of visually impaired viewers while offering sighted viewers a new understanding of what it means to ‘see.’ While the two-dimensional nature of a web-based platform allows only for a visual reproduction of these tactile pieces, the message remains pertinent and important even if only realistically reaching the sighted viewer in this format. The goal of these panels is to provide accessibility, promote consciousness of different types of lived experiences, and to provoke thought on how we might improve our modes of communication and design so that everyone can receive the message.”—Sierra Decatur
