Spatial Metaphors
"This series is a study in the process of painting and perceiving. As an act of generating a two-dimensional surface in a three-dimensional world, painting raises questions about transformation and medium. The painter is a creator of space, and the inventive and reflexive process of producing forces her to become conscious of her own acts and perceptions. These paintings trace, in oil on canvas, a discovery of this consciousness."
Nadège Giraudet's concentration combines neuroscience, philosophy, and aesthetics. These works were originally created as part of her senior project, entitled “Spatial Metaphors,” which grounded itself in the ideas of Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space. Drawing from scientific and aesthetic theory and the practice of art making, this project investigated the role of the painter as originator and observer of felt experience.
