What does it look like, what does it sound like, and what does it feel like?
Joy
“I made this video in response to a prompt Professor Keith Miller gave to the students in his Spring 2020 Arts Workshop, “The Craft and Art of Directing for the Screen.” It was right at the start of the remote learning process, when everyone was trying to figure out how to do film classes when we couldn’t meet in-person. It was a very anxious time for student filmmakers, and I think this assignment was a good answer to that anxiety.
“The prompt asked us to think about joy. In other words, how would we portray joy cinematically—what does it look like, what does it sound like, and what does it feel like? In retrospect, I don’t think that the video that I made is a good representation of joy. Instead, it’s more of a reflection on how I was feeling at that moment. And although I didn’t quite succeed in portraying joy on film, I did find a sort of joy in the process of making the video and thinking about what I was going through.”—Jeffrey Yoon
