Museum Highlights: A Gallatin Talk

Museum Highlights: A Gallatin Talk

This performance piece is a modern Gallatin-themed riff on performance artist Andrea Fraser’s Museum Highlights: A Gallery Talk (1989). Using ChatGPT to generate the script, I spent hours asking the chatbot about Andrea Fraser and training it to understand the fictional docent I thought up, Margaux Wilson. After a while, the bot gave me a script which I deemed accurate enough to the original performance’s tone and intent. To do so, I fed it links to Andrea Fraser’s work, critical essays on her work, information about Gallatin, the Gallatin Galleries website, as well as descriptions of the art in Gallatin. I prompted the bot with specific questions/commands and focused primarily on honing the tone of the script. For the integrity of the project, I avoided forcing the bot to incorporate specific words or themes. The final product is nothing without its source material and is ultimately a 2023 mimicry through an urban, university-based lens.
